The tusker that charged the bus | BR Hills - Trek Notes
Clicked in Dec 1998 / B.R. Hills Trek
On the day 2 of our hike - We were unable to get permission at the checkpoint in BR Hills for a hike up the Mulki hill. So, we visited the horticulture there and were enlightened about the medicinal plants that were grown in the nursery. Later we hiked up a hill called the Gangadhar hill. After lunch we left for Chamarajnagar to visit the Forest Office there and talk to the Ranger. After a chat with the Ranger we took a bus back to BR Hills, to spend the night at the CPWD quarters.
Since the area is frequented by elephants often , all vehicles are banned between 6 pm to 6 am. Even the milestones were painted green for the elephants uproot the ones painted white.
The journey from Chamarajnagar to BR Hills became very exciting when the bus stopped because of a Tusker sighting along side the road. I sat down next to the bus driver and manage to take a photograph of the tusker from inside the bus when all of a sudden the Tusker charged at the bus.
The bus driver immediately thrust all his power on the throttle and away we went chased by the Tusker for some distance… It rained heavily that night , we got properly drenched . I hit the sack early. Vivek and Dhananjay were probably goofing around or chatting late into the night.
I was truly excited… since we were going to hike into the depths of this very forest the next day.
